History of Kyrgyzstan’s Postal Service
Creation History (USSR):
- “Kyrgyz Post” has its origins from the time when the Kyrgyz people were part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. In 1878, the first post station was opened in the city of Pishpek (now Bishkek). At that time, postal stations were located along major transportation routes, as this allowed for communication between different regions and the central hub.
- The postal service played an important role in exchanging information, parcels, and correspondence between various regions of the USSR. A number of post offices were built across the republic, which significantly improved access to postal services for the population.
Independent Kyrgyzstan:
- After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kyrgyzstan gained independence, and the postal service became an essential element of the new statehood. Kyrgyz Post was reorganized and became an independent enterprise.
- In 1993, the state enterprise “Kyrgyz Post” was established and registered as a full member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). From that moment, 192 countries began exchanging international postal items with UPU member countries and actively participating in the Union’s activities.
Modern Period:
- In the early 2000s, large-scale modernization of the postal service took place. Modern information technologies, automated mail processing systems, and improved logistics were introduced. In 2013, “Kyrgyz Post” joined the postal union of the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC), which improved international postal connections.
- Today, JSC “Kyrgyz Post” offers a wide range of services, including traditional postal services, courier delivery, financial, and logistics services. JSC “Kyrgyz Post” continues to develop and modernize to meet the needs of modern customers.

- By a decree of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic on April 8, 2022, No. 203, the state enterprise “Kyrgyz Post” was transformed into a joint-stock company, with 100% of shares remaining in state ownership.
- Based on the postal management offices, a network of branches of JSC “Kyrgyz Post” was established, and a unified system for managing regional postal structures was implemented, based on common principles of accounting, tax, and management control. Currently, JSC “Kyrgyz Post” is a strategic entity that operates on a self-sustaining basis, providing socially significant postal and financial services to the population.
